From ‘Not in My Room’ to Sleeping on Lap

I tried to keep distance from Hazel, but her gentle ways turned every rule into love.

My daughter was the one who first asked for a pet. She wanted either a dog or a cat. After thinking through what would work best for us, we decided on a cat. I told her we could bring one home only if she took responsibility for feeding her, brushing her, and cleaning up after her. She agreed without hesitation.

We met many kittens, but one quiet little one caught our attention, especially my daughter’s. Her name was Pixie at the shelter, but once we brought her home, we renamed her Hazel because of her beautiful eyes.

In the beginning, I set very clear rules. Hazel could go into my daughter’s room, the bathroom, the kitchen, and the living room, but not my bedroom. I was keeping a little emotional distance and telling myself I would not get too attached.

A few weeks later, Hazel had already become a full member of our family. Her innocent face, her tiny footsteps running toward us whenever we called her name, the way she made herself present in the softest ways, she won all of us over. She became affectionate, playful, and somehow always knew how to make us smile.

I was telling a friend about my strict rules from the early days, how Hazel was not allowed in my room, and how I tried to keep her at arm’s length. My friend laughed and said, “You said no to a cat, you kept your distance, you did not let her near your room, and now she sleeps on your lap. That is because you are someone who loves deeply and always wants to comfort others. How could you ever keep rules from a little soul like her.”

And she was right. Hazel did not break the rules. She softened them, one purr at a time.
