It’s strange how casually people say things, sharp comments, unnecessary remarks, or opinions that land a little too hard, and the moment you try to explain your side, they quickly restate behind one sentence:
“I was just joking.”
I’ve always wondered why the original comment is treated as harmless fun, but the justification for it is seen as overthinking.
The truth is, many people use “I was just joking” as a shield.
A way to avoid looking at the impact of their words.
A way to protect their ego from being questioned.
Humor is beautiful when it brings people closer.
But humor that hurts, even lightly, is not humor. It is a disguised opinion.
And when someone responds, clarifies, or defends themselves, it isn’t overreacting. It is simply acknowledging that words have weight.
Maybe the real issue is that,
Some jokes are not jokes. They are truths wrapped in laughter, hoping no one notices.
And when someone does notice, the easiest thing to say is, “I was just joking.”
